Nell\u2019epoca in cui dominavano sul territorio italiano le grandi Signorie e le Repubbliche Marinare, gli artisti furono chiamati dai potenti a decorare palazzi e chiese a testimonianza della propria influenza. Giotto arriv\u00f2 a Padova, intorno al 1302, su invito dai frati minori della Basilica di Sant\u2019Antonio su indicazione dei confratelli di Assisi. La famiglia dei Carraresi, all\u2019epoca in contrasto con la Repubblica Serenissima di Venezia, inizi\u00f2 una politica della cultura. Pi\u00f9 e meglio di altri importanti Signorie del XIV secolo, essi si mossero in un contesto cosmopolita, stringendo relazioni con le principali corti europee.
